During the March Apopka Food Truck Round Up we decided to grab a few delicious bites from the Treehouse Truck.

The All American Burger – Classic Bacon Cheeseburger with Lettuce and Tomato

Cooked just right and a delicious classic to go with any day of the week.

Chicken Cheesesteak – Chicken Cheesesteak wit Onions and Cheez Whiz served on an Amoroso Roll

A great take on the traditional cheesesteak and I love the Cheez Whiz instead of the normal melted cheese many restaurants tend to put on their cheesesteaks.

Finding a Great Bite to Eat in Austin #SXSW #SXSWedu

Are you a foodie traveling to Austin? It’s a great town for foodies! We can’t resist eating at some of our favorite spots, including a few new ones, each time we visit Austin. This blog isn’t just for those traveling to Austin for SXSWedu or SXSW, but for anyone that enjoys a good meal in town full of foodie delights.

We always make a pack when traveling to not eat in any places we could eat at home. We think you should do the same.

Here are a few of the places we recommend you eat in Austin!

Le Cafe Crepe

The best place in Austin near the convention center for breakfast is Le Cafe Crepe with a vast variety of crepes, inlcuding a breakfast special with coffee or tea, fresh fruit, and a crepes with various filling options. It’s a friendly, family owned restaurant where I have never had a bad meal. The first crepe I devoured was filled with egg, ham, and cheddar cheese. The next visit was filled with spinach, Swiss cheese, and eggs. Don’t miss this spot while visiting Austin, TX.

Easy Tiger

The Easy Tiger (located right outside the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown Austin) is a bake shop and brew house. Upstairs features a bake shop with coffee, tea, fresh bread, pretzels, and sandwiches. Downstairs features a brew house and restaurant with over 20 craft beers on draft, beer cheese, house made sausages on pretzel buns, and more! It’s a great environment with good services. Plus you can always grab a paddle for a game of ping pong.

We snacked on the delicious Snack Board (2 Small Pretzels, Large Beer Cheese, House Mustard, Chex Mix, Jerky), unique Linguiça (Wild Boar, Garlic, Paprika, Smoke with Bacon-Braised Greens), and tasty Classic Bratwurst (Pork, Veal with Mustard & Kraut) both on a pretzel bun (a must).

Chupacabra Cantina

For a quick taste of Tex Mex we stopped into Chupacabra Cantina for lunch. Simple Tex Mex with a few unique lunch items at a great price. We ordered the Mini Burritos stuffed with pulled chicken, covered in chili con queso and green chili sauce and Yucatan Pulled Pork Enchiladas stuffed with pulled pork and topped with avocado tomatilla sauce, habenero sour cream, and pineapple pico. Both were severed with rice and beans and under $7.

Frank – Hot Dogs – Cold Beer

You can’t pass up a place who’s website is http://hotdogscoldbeer.com/, even as a vegetarian they have tons of options. It’s pretty obvious what they serve but it’s not your Momma’s hot dog.

The Chicago Dog (Poppy seed bun, 100% Vienna Beef dressed with pickle spear, tomatoes, onions, day-glo relish, sport peppers, celery salt, mustard) was so good she couldn’t resist having a second.

The Southern Boy (Blackened, split Vienna Beef Hot Polish link dressed with caramelized onions, crispy pork belly, pepper jack cheese and our Dr. Doppelgänger BBQ sauce) was unique and a great variation to a traditional dog.

The Cheese Waffle Fries (Cheddar, sour cream, and chives) reminded me of loaded potatoes and was a great side to split.

We couldn’t resist dessert with the word BACON in them. We split Chocolate-Covered Bacon (Hickory-smoked bacon dipped in milk chocolate, turbinado sugar and sea salt) and soft delicious Chocolate Chip & Bacon Cookie (House baked chocolate chip, pecan, walnut, cranberry and bacon cookie).

Piranha Killer Sushi

Craving sushi? GivePiranha Killer Sushi a try near the convention center. It’s a great choice with decent wine prices, delicious fresh sushi, and good service. We grabbed a few basic rolls, including avocado, salmon, California, and Philly. The highlight was the Lobster Roll (masago, scallions, shrimp tempura & ginger cream topped with avocado & lobster) was ever bit of deliciousness in your mouth. For dessert we dived into the Banana Spring Roll à La Mode, I wasn’t a big fan of the green tea ice cream, but loved the red.

Barnie’s Coffee Kitchen Winter Park Is More Than Just Coffee

Nestled right on Park Avenue in Winter Park, Florida is the adorable Barnie’s Coffee Kitchen. They were the gracious host for the Central Florida Food Bloggers meetup on Wednesday, January 29, 2014. The meetup wasn’t just about Barnie’s fresh roasted coffee from Kenya or the Turkish mocha, it was about their latest local farm fresh dinner choices.

We kicked off the evening with a spiced apple sparkler made with apple juice, creme de cassis, dry sparkling wine, and pinch of cinnamon. The apple juice and cinnamon were frozen into a ice cube mold overnight.

Next we sampled a few first bites. My favorite was the scallop and blood orange served on a single spoon for easy sampling.

A few other first included the Tuna Carpaccio and Wild Mushroom Tart. I’m not the biggest fish and mushroom fan, but I heard great things from other tasters.

Tuna Carpaccio: Sliced fennel, arugula, radish, and black olives.

Wild Mushroom Tart: Hen-of-the-woods mushrooms in a rich truffle scented custard, baked in a flaky crust.

Next was time to dig into a few unique dinner choices. My favorite was the herb crusted lamb loin.

Herb crushed lamb loin: Seared lamb loin with a cassoulet of beans, heirloom carrots, and preserved lemon.

Buttermilk poached chicken breast with a saffron farro “risotto”, sauce romensco, and charred green tomatoes.

Harvest moon roasted vegetables with roasted baby carrots, caramelized sunchokes, watermelon radishes, mushrooms, and potatoes that are finished with a warm sunchoke cream.

Assorted desserts were served along with coffee to end a great tasting.

Don’t forget to grab of bag of fresh ground coffee to take home to enjoy a cup on your own or share with friends.

The kitchen staff was amazing all night long; showcasing their abundant talent and creativity.

Taste for Learning: Supporting Education with Wine and Spirits

Every year and a half, vintners from around the world donate and pour their finest wines and spirits to help raise dollars for scholarships at Taste for Learning in Orlando, FL, courtesy of ABC Fine Wine & Spirits. The event marks the continuation of joint philanthropy efforts between the Valencia College Foundation and the Orlando Health Foundation. Taste for Learning will benefit both Valencia College scholarships and Orlando Health’s medical education program. Every item is donated — from the gourmet food to the international wines poured by their own vintners, to the advertising and the decor. 100% of all dollars raised from tickets, sponsorships, and auction items will go back to these foundations. The last six events have raised $2,266,825 for student scholarships and medical education.

Plan to join us at the Rosen Shingle Creek on May 17, 2014 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. to enjoy wine, spirits, food, and friendship. I would suggest booking at room at the Rosen Shingle Creek for a discounted rate for this event, too.

The Last Shift for a Great Orlando Food Truck, Big Wheel Truck

The Orlando food truck craze began just a few years ago. One of the first to be mentioned on Eat St. and to take food truck cuisine to a new level was Big Wheel Truck.

Sunday, January 19, 2014 was the last shift for Chef Tony Adams and his Big Wheel Truck crew at the East End Market. After spending some time up north, Adams ventured back to Orlando to enjoy some lovely Florida winter weather and spread his love for food to others. Adams partnered up with the East End Market to offer a few classes, dinners, and one last Big Wheel Truck pop-up!

Big Wheel fans and local foodie newbies came out for their final taste of the Big Wheel Truck. They wanted one last bite of some Big Wheel classics. When asking people waiting in line what they thought about Big Wheel Truck, a few key words seemed to be repeated; local, fresh, unique, and delicious!

Lump crab stuffed Florida avocado with sticky rice and momofuku vinaigrette.

Seared beef heart tacos with waterkist tomato salsa.

Colossal shrimp and grits with spicy andouille sausage.

Thanks to Chef Tony Adams and the rest of his crew for one last taste of something local, delicious, and fresh! Your food will be missed!

Donuts! Burgers! Cheese! Treehouse Truck gets a visit from Food Network’s Eat St.

The Treehouse Truck recently was filmed by the Food Network for their show all about food trucks, Eat St.. They were on location at the Golf Channel in Orlando for a lunchtime shoot. I was lucky enough to get interviewed and take a big tasty bite of the GC Luther Burger – Bacon Cheeseburger in between 2 Krispy Kreme Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. Hopefully a few snippet of my interview make the edits for the show.

Lots of foodies were interviews by the Eat St. crew. Taking a big bite is a must!

Other featured menu items included:

Papa Nick’s Roast Pork – Philly Style Sliced Roast Pork rubbed with Treehouse Blend of Herbs and Spices served with Sharp Provolone Cheese and Broccoli Rabe. Served on an Amoroso Roll.
Mama’s PBJ – Deep Fried Peanut Butter, Jelly, Banana, and Nutella Sandwich.
Hot Ness – A whole habañero pepper mixed into an all-beef patty, grilled and topped with melted American cheese, fresh cilantro, tomato, and drizzled with sour cream on a toasted bun.

I was wearing my Google Glass while being interviewed. Here is a look at the crew from my point of view.

I was able to grab a sketch of the Eat St crew filming too.

The hit food truck showcase TV show, Eat St. from the Food Network and Cooking Channel, will be coming back to Florida January 10-18, 2014 to film some of the sunshine state’s favorite food trucks. Many of these are local to us in Orlando. Check out their filming schedule below.
